The Eddy is a three channel stereo CV controlled mixer with sidechained compression and distortion, designed as a compact submixer. It also has normalized feedback paths for more experimental tone shaping, no-input mixing, and percussion synthesis workflows.
INPUT SWITCHES
Up position is on
Center position is inverted
Bottom position is off
Up position causes the channel to feed back without external input.
INPUT POTENTIOMETERS
Attenuates incoming CV or normalized 10V to control channel level
Unity gain at noon and approx., 2x gain fully clockwise
Input 3 has header selectable 10x gain for line level input
CV INPUTS
Goes to the associated attenuator then controls the level of the stereo channel
5V should be about unity and 10V 2x gain
AUDIO INPUTS
AC coupled stereo input channels
Left channel is normalized to right channel for mono signals
If no input is present on left channel feedback is normalized there
EDDY PEAK METER
Shows the levels of both positive and negative peaks at the output, double the number to know approximate peak to peak value (5V, 10V ,20V)
DIST out limits at 6V (12Vpp) and COMP will stop at the threshold and not clip unless the external sidechain is used
EDDY OUT SELECT SWITCH
Selects which output bus (DIST, COMP, or MIX) appears at OUT L and OUT R
IN4/SIDECHAIN INPUT
DC coupled mono input either to mix bus or compressor sidechain.
Compressor threshold is available is accesible as a trimmer on the rear of module
IN4 has a header for 4x additional gain
SIDECHAIN SELECT SWITCH
Selects if the fourth input is a mono, unity gain input, or an input to the sidechain
If SCHAIN is selected with no input then the compression will be defeated.
EDDY OUT L and OUT R
Main output selected by OUT SELECT SWITCH
The seperately available Cascade expander allows access to the individual VCA outputs for use as a triple stereo VCA as well as access to the feedback filter outputs and simultaneous clean, compressed, and distorted bus outputs for additional mixing and processing options.
PATCHES TO START WITH
Three Channel Mixer
•Patch inputs in INL and INR 1 - 3
•Set OUT SELECT switch to MIX
•Set input switches to top position (ON) •Listen to OUT L and OUT R
•Watch PEAK meter for clipping
Mixer with compression and sidechain
•Set OUT SELECT switch to COMP
•Set SIDECHAIN switch to IN4 to use the ouput as sidechain input
•Mix to taste
•Peak meter should never clip
Mixer with sidechain compression
•Set SIDECHAIN switch to SCHAIN
•Inject sidechain signal at IN 4
•Watch peak meter for clipping (compression will only come from external source)
Three Channel VCA
•Attach CASCADE expander module •Input signals on EDDY at IN1 - 3
•Set CASCADE SELECT switch to CH
•Listen to the output of each channel at it’s related jack on CASCADE
•Control each signal with the CV IN jacks
Feedback distortion (no input mixing)
•Set SIDECHAIN switch to IN4
•Input signal at IN4
•Remove all other inputs
•Listen to main output pair
•Turn on each channel (input switch fully up) •Raise each input slowly
•Listen to how the feedback interacts with the input signal
•Explore the different outputs
Feedback drum machine
•Remove the signal at IN4 (or replace it with a kick drum)
•Use an envelope generator (such as Boundary Layer) to send percussive envelopesintoCVIN1,CVIN2,andCVIN3 •IN1 will become a volume knob for a hi pitched sound
•IN2 will become level for a mid pitched sound such as rimshot or clave
•IN3 will become level for a bass sound
Three Channel Distorted Filter Bank
•Attach CASCADE expander module •Input signals on EDDY at IN1 - 3
•Set CASCADE SELECT switch to EQ •Listen to the output of each channel at it’s related jack on CASCADE
